UM denies ordering 500 meals from Picha Eats, is mulling legal action against fraudsters

University says no work offers were issued, procurement documents inconsistent with official contract letters

KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Malaya (UM) has clarified that it did not order 500 meals from local social enterprise Picha Eats as the procurement documents were inconsistent with the institution’s offer letters.

“Universiti Malaya would like to confirm that no work offers were issued to the operator. Documents were also not consistent with contract letters issued by the university.

“We take scams seriously, which not only misuses our trademark and tarnishes the university’s image, but also defrauds the victim. The university is mulling legal action, including lodging a police report,” it said in a statement today.

The university added that management conducts its businesses via the UM Procurement and Payment Management online system.

Earlier, Picha Eats said it had received a scam order from “Universiti Malaya” for a 500-pax event that was supposed to happen today.

By noon, the enterprise managed to sell all of the meals initially prepared for the event. It also lodged a police report on the fraudulent order.
