Malaysia squash maintains superiority, secures SEA Cup Championship victory

Team asserts dominance, claiming mixed team event title in Manila, Philippines

9:37 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s squash squad demonstrated their superiority by claiming the mixed team event title at the Southeast Asia (SEA) Cup Championship, which concluded today in Manila, Philippines.

In today’s final match, Malaysia’s Sanjay Jeeva easily defeated the home player, David Pelino, with scores of 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 in just 24 minutes.

Despite the Philippines’ efforts, led by former national player Low Wee Wern, to stage a comeback through their women’s singles player, Jemyca Aribado, they were unable to stop Malaysia’s Sehveetrra Kumar.

Sehveetrra clinched victory in just 28 minutes with scores of 11-1, 12-10, 11-5, securing the championship for Malaysia.

“I think my match was good but I had a little pressure and had to give some cheap points, which made the points closer, but still I managed to outplay her and win in straight sets.

“I think everyone did their best and nobody showed any poor performance in any of their matches,” said Sehveetrra.

Earlier, Malaysia dominated the singles events, with Sanjay Jeeva winning the men’s singles and Ainaa Amani claiming the women’s singles title.

Furthermore, Ainaa, partnered with Ong Sai Hung in the mixed doubles event, showcased excellent teamwork to secure Malaysia’s third title in the championship.

This marks Malaysia’s seventh mixed team championship victory since the tournament’s inception in 2015. – June 9, 2024
