No promotion for leader if their dept has cases of corruption, PM warns

He says this will be proposed in next meeting with chief secretary to govt, highlights it is ‘impossible’ heads are unaware of such issues under their watch

9:57 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – There will be no promotion for the head of a department if any misconduct by civil servants under their supervision exists and goes unreported, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim cautioned.

He said this move will be suggested to the chief secretary to the government in the upcoming meeting, expected to be held in the next one or two days regarding the adjustment of civil servants’ salaries.

“It is impossible that the heads of units and departments do not know about corruption happening in their departments. If some of them have been going on for years, then why haven’t you reported it?

“From now on, it will not be just the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s duties (to counter corruption). Now department heads should also take note and report any wrongdoings,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya this morning.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the decision regarding the civil servants’ salary adjustment is expected to be announced next month by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali and the Public Services Director-General Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.

“I hope you understand; otherwise, you have the option to decline the role of department head because it requires greater responsibility.

“Inform the Public Services director-general that you prefer to work as an ordinary officer – you don’t want to take on the responsibility of a unit or department head,'” he said.

He said this is not a matter of saving the image and integrity of civil servants but of saving this country.

“I want Malaysia to be known as a clean country, or at least a country with minimal corruption – unlike what it is now,” Anwar said. – June 10, 2024
