KUALA LUMPUR – A woman charged with illegal possession of firearms in connection with the case involving Israeli national Avitan Shalom is not receiving medical treatment in prison, her lawyer has alleged.
Lawyer Mohamad Isa Mohamad Basir, who is representing Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, is also applying to the court for his client to be treated outside the prison.
He said his client passed out in the Kajang women’s prison and only received treatment today, Bernama reported him saying during case mention at the Kuala Selangor sessions court today.
Sharifah Faraha, 41, had also complained of pain in her head and requested an X-ray.
Isa said his team was also in the process of obtaining the health records of the accused, who had previously suffered from depression and anxiety, at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor.
He also told the sessions court that prison wardens had given false information on his client.
“I understand that the wardens have given various false information and have put pressure on my client, and this act needs to stop,” he said.
Isa today submitted two applications to the court for Sharifah Faraha to be granted medical examination at a clinic outside the prison.
Deputy public prosecutor Fazeedah Faik told the court she had received a representation from Sharifah Faraha on June 2 and was studying it.
As the prosecution is also preparing further documents to be submitted to the defence, sessions court judge Ahmad Faizadh Yahya fixed July 11 for re-mention of the case.
The judge also said the defence’s applications for medical treatment outside the prison should be resolved administratively by prison authorities.
On April 8, Sharifah Faraha and her husband Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 43, were charged with illegal possession of firearms linked to the arrest of the Israeli.
Sharifah Faraha pleaded not guilty to possessing a CZ 75 P-01 Cal.9 Luger pistol at a house in Kg Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor at 8pm on March 29.
Her charge is under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years and no less than six strokes of the cane if convicted.
Azim was charged under Section 9 of the same act on consorting with a person carrying arms.
Shalom was arrested at a hotel in Jalan Ampang on March 27 and had in his possession six pistols and nearly 200 rounds of ammunition, for which he was charged on April 12. – June 11, 2024
