No connection between ministry and contract awarded to Asia Mobiliti: Azam

MACC commissioner says investigations are focused on the contract awarding process

12:55 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s investigation into a company linked to the spouse of a federal minister will remain focused on the contract award process by the Selangor government.

Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said that there is no connection between the concerned ministry and the contract awarded to Asia Mobiliti Technologies Sdn Bhd.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the area we are focusing on is the procedure for awarding the contract to the company.

“However, as mentioned earlier, there is currently no involvement from the federal ministry or the minister in relation to the contract,” Azam said.

Azam was speaking today after the launch of “The Sin of Corruption: A Religious Perspective” book in Putrajaya today.

Selangor Investment, Trade, and Mobility executive councillor Ng Sze Han previously said the decision to involve only Asia Mobiliti and another firm, Badan Bas Coach Sdn Bhd, in the proof-of-concept phase was based on the fact that they were the only companies licensed by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad).

Each company received equal funding of RM2.1 million from the Selangor government, disbursed in three phases to prevent abuse of state funds and to subsidise users during the proof-of-concept, he said.

The DRT system is a shared transportation service that groups passengers based on their locations and sends vehicles accordingly. This system can adjust routes on-demand, unlike traditional services that adhere to fixed routes and schedules.

The appointment of Asia Mobiliti courted controversy as its co-founder and chief executive officer, Ramachandran Muniandy, is married to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

On X, a user named @RakyatAduan asked Yeoh for clarification on Asia Mobiliti’s appointment for the project, asking, “Was there an open tender? On what merit was the company selected?”

Azam previously said that the MACC had no issues with the contract being awarded to Asia Mobility because it was awarded by the Selangor government, not the Youth and Sports Ministry. – June 13, 2024
