KUALA LUMPUR – Another food poisoning episode has struck a school, this time at a residential school in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan, causing 24 students to fall ill.

A source from Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital in Kuala Pilah confirmed to Scoop that 24 students were sent to the hospital last night. Fifteen of them who were warded overnight have been discharged today.

“The students were sent to the emergency department last night for food poisoning,” the source said.

Media reports cite Negri Sembilan Education director Datuk Roslan Hussin saying the students fell ill after eating lunch at the school.

As all of them range from Form 1 to 5, it is believed that they consumed food from the school’s canteen.

Roslan was also reported saying that the 15 students who remained admitted were being treated for mild food poisoning and were in stable condition.

The district health office is investigating the incident, he added.

Another food poisoning case at a school occurred last Friday, killing two people – a 17-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl – and causing 82 others to fall ill.

They ate tainted fried bihun and fried eggs brought home by their parents who were at the school on Friday when it hosted an Islamic charity skills event for 30 schools in the Gombak district, Selangor.

The teenager and the toddler died on Monday after experiencing symptoms. While laboratory test results on food samples taken are still pending, the Health Ministry has said it found traces of salmonella in stool samples taken in connection with the incident. – June 13, 2024
