Faisal’s dressing room pep talk inspires Selangor FC to 4-0 FA Cup triumph

Sharul Nazeem expresses gratitude for Faisal Halim’s encouragement, highlights positive impact it had on team's morale, inspiring them to perform at their peak

11:30 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor FC centre-back Sharul Nazeem credited Faisal Halim’s presence in the dressing room for boosting the team’s morale before their Malaysia FA Cup opener against Negeri Sembilan FC at the MBPJ Stadium today.

The Red Giants comfortably won the match 4-0, courtesy of goals from Yohandry Orozco and new signing Alvin Fortes, who each scored a brace.

The 26-year-old Faisal attended his first football match since being discharged from the hospital after recovering from a fourth-degree injury sustained in an acid attack on May 5.

Accompanied by marshals, the winger was seen with his wife and son watching the match, with the Selangor ultras singing “Semoga Cepat Sembuh Faisal” for their stalwart player.

Sharul expressed his happiness at finally meeting his good friend Faisal after the horrific incident and further expressed his desire to play with him once he returns from his sports rehabilitation.

“Faisal came into the dressing room, and he kept encouraging us to give our 100% in this match as this is a knockout competition. It was a pleasant surprise for all of us, and we were all happy to see him in a good state after the horrific incident that he went through.

“His presence elevated the spirit in the dressing room, and we were so pumped up to perform the moment we stepped onto the pitch.

“I’m also happy that my family came to the stadium to watch my game, and I’m happy to win in front of my father.

“Alhamdulillah, we gave our hearts out in this game, and I’m happy that we managed to qualify for the next round,” said Sharul after the match.

Sharul, who started the match as a right-back under head coach Nidzam Jamil’s 4-1-4-1 formation, said he had no issues with the sudden change of deployment from his coach.

“For me, it’s a new position that I’m trying, and I have to admit that the position was indeed challenging for me after years of playing as a centre-back. But I have no issues with the position deployed by coach Nidzam.

“As a footballer, I need to make sure that I’m versatile and able to play in positions that my coach puts me in.

“I’m happy with the chemistry that I have with my backline, and we always discuss our gameplay for the betterment of the team.

“Alhamdulillah, in the next few months, we will definitely get better. My performance is getting better every day, but I’m still not satisfied as I still have a lot to improve,” Sharul added.

The 24-year-old Gombak-born player, who made his debut with the club in 2021, is one of the few players from the current Selangor squad who has managed to rise through the ranks from the youth academy.

For the record, the Red Giants have won the FA Cup five times (1991, 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2009) in their 119-year history. – June 15, 2024
