‘Hospital yet to arrange paeds, psych follow-up for boy suffering from heatstroke after teacher’s punishment’

Family seeks private hospital for boy’s mental health evaluation despite wage earner father as breadwinner, also applies for disabilities card

9:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Ampang Hospital has yet to arrange for the 11-year-old student, who was made to stand under the hot sun for hours by his teacher, to have follow-up consultations with a paediatrician and a psychiatrist, claimed the victim’s family spokesperson S. Dayalan.

After this, he said the family is trying to get a reference to bring the victim to a private hospital for an evaluation on his mental health status.

“We are trying to bring him to a private hospital next week for treatment. He is not ready to go back to school.

“The boy is still traumatised and he needs help. We requested the Ampang hospital to arrange a psychiatric consultation for the victim but no actions were taken.”

He was speaking to reporters after submitting a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) here today, urging the authorities to expedite the investigation into the incident.

Dayalan said the family has applied to the Social Welfare Department to get a person with disabilities (PwD) card, which will take around a month, and will find a way to fund the victim’s medical bills.

“The Social Welfare Department will have to put him in a special school. Sending him to a special school is the second priority but he needs a mental health check-up first.”

Dayalan also said the victim’s 35-year-old mother, A.D. Mogahana Selvi has been admitted for the fourth time now since the incident happened on April 30.

He added that the mother, who is four months pregnant with fifth child, has not been eating well as she has been worried about her son.

The victim’s father, Suresh Balakrishna, 40, said he has been taking care of his four sons, including the victim while his wife has been in and out of hospital.

“Fortunately, my boss has been supportive and let me take leave to take care of my family,” he said after submitting the memorandum.

Earlier, Scoop reported that the victim’s father is a wage earner and the family’s sole breadwinner.
The family’s lawyer Dinesh Muthal previously told Scoop that a suit will be filed against the teacher and the school’s headmaster by the end of the month, seeking damages for the victim. – June 21, 2024
