Selangor govt, fans raise RM20,000 to help pay Selangor FC’s fine

Selangor MB Amirudin and state sports exco announced their initiative yesterday, just after the imposition of the original fine

9:18 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – In less than 24 hours, the Selangor government and fans of Selangor FC have successfully raised RM20,000 to help pay the initial RM100,000 fine imposed by the Malaysian Football League (MFL).

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the fundraising milestone today on his social media accounts.

“An overwhelming response to the Solidariti Bersama Selangor FC campaign. The funds raised have reached RM20,000 in less than 24 hours since the launch.

“Contributors came from all over the country. This is the beauty of football,” said Amirudin in his post today.

This initiative follows the MFL’s announcement two days ago, imposing a RM100,000 fine and other penalties on Selangor FC.

However, the MFL updated the fine today, reducing it to RM60,000, following a reconsideration “in a show of respect for the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah,” they stated in a statement.

Initially, the Red Giants were also docked three points in the 2024/2025 Super League season, and their upcoming match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium was to be played without spectators. These decisions have been overturned.

These penalties were imposed due to Selangor FC’s withdrawal from the Charity Shield match last month.

Following the announcement of the fine, Amirudin, alongside the state sports exco, launched a joint initiative to raise funds to help pay the fine.

He also pledged to galvanise this collective effort, with the state councillor personally contributing to the fundraising.

Sg Tawar assemblyman Datuk Rizam Ismail also joined the effort, donating half of his salary next month to help ease the burden of Selangor FC.

Rizam, who is also the Selangor Rural Development, Unity and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman, said his decision was a gesture of solidarity with Selangor’s football team.

Rapper Altimet, whose real name is Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman Alhadad, also offered to donate half of his intellectual property royalties this year to support Selangor FC. – June 27, 2024
