M’sian think-tank receives accreditation to observe British elections

Think-tank, Asia Middle East Centre for Research & Dialogue (Amec) says invitation highlights UK’s respect, confidence placed in local institutions to contribute in its electoral processes

9:06 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Asia Middle East Centre for Research & Dialogue (Amec) will participate as an observer in the upcoming British national elections on July 4.

The group, which is based here, said in a statement that this is the first time a Malaysian think-tank has been authorised to observe the British polls.

“Amec is honoured to be trusted by the UK for this important role. This invitation highlights the UK’s recognition of Amec’s expertise and commitment to democracy, transparency, and fair governance.

“It speaks volumes about the respect and confidence placed in Malaysian institutions to contribute to international electoral processes.”

The think-tank’s mission in Britain will be led by former Maldivian politician Muad Mohamad Zaki and Maldivian diplomat Ahmed Farih Mohamed.

Currently, Amec’s election observation team is already in Britain.

“The accreditation by the British Electoral Commission is a testament to Amec’s capability and commitment to operating at the highest levels of international electoral observation, bringing pride to Malaysia and showcasing its potential in the realm of global diplomacy and governance.” – July 1, 2024
