Urimai not joining PN or any coalition for now, says its interim sec-gen

Indian-based party may consider alliances with other parties when ‘ready’, strongly rules out PH

KUALA LUMPUR – Indian-based party Urimai has dismissed speculation it wants to join Perikatan Nasional (PN) or any coalition, as its priority is to be approved by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

The party’s interim secretary-general Satees Muniandy said Urimai will consider joining a political coalition when it is “ready”.

“Urimai party has never applied to join PN or any other coalition, and there are no discussions taking place on that matter.

“Our position is, we may consider alliances in the future…We are still building our base and preparing ourselves to join electoral politics and we are not in urgency to seek alliances in the midst of that process. 

“We will seek alliances with other political parties, when we are ready,” he said in a statement today.

However, he ruled out the ruling coalition, Pakatan Harapan (PH), which he called a “farce multiracial coalition”.

Satees said Urimai continues to have conversations with other political parties, particularly those in the opposition bloc to talk about taking on a meaningful political role.

“Those discussions were never about joining any coalitions, but mostly on issues affecting the weaker section of Malaysian society. 

“With this clarification, I hope the talks of Urimai ‘joining coalitions’ will be put to rest.” 

His statement follows news reports quoting Urimai chairman P. Ramasamy that the party Urimai could join PN if it championed the interest of non-Muslims. – July 2, 2024
