Firm’s chairman and director latest to be remanded in highway project graft probe

Their company was a subcontractor for project worth over RM1 billion in Klang Valley, says MACC

KUALA LUMPUR – Two more individuals, a company chairman with a “Datuk” title, and the firm’s director, have been remanded by the anti-graft agency for investigations into alleged corruption involving a highway project worth over RM1 billion.

A source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said the company was a subcontractor in the highway project located in the Klang Valley.

The duo were detained last night between 9pm and 12am after giving their statements at the MACC headquarters.

Remand orders were obtained earlier today from magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin at the Putrajaya magistrates’ court, with the chairman to be held for five days until July 6, and three days for the company director until July 4.

“Both of them are suspected of giving bribes amounting to over RM200,000 to statutory body officials in return for getting the roadworks project that was previously carried out by a different company,” the source said.

“They are also believed to have given bribes to officials at a highway concession company for the same purpose.”

MACC investigation division senior director Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrests and said the investigation was conducted under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

He also confirmed that other suspects previously remanded over the same case had been released upon the end of their remand period.

This includes the chief executive of a highway concession company, who was released yesterday on RM150,000 bail.

On June 25, it was reported that the MACC had detained eight individuals, including highway concessionaire Prolintas CEO Datuk Mohammad Azlan Abdullah, for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes related to the construction of two highway projects in the Klang Valley worth over RM1.6 billion.

Prolintas has said it will fully cooperate and work closely with the authorities to assist in the investigation. – July 2, 2024
