KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will play its role as a regulatory body in the government’s second 5G network plan to prevent any single provider from dominating, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said this in response to Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who accused the government of having a flawed strategy for establishing a second 5G network.

The Bersatu member further alleged that the government was fostering conflicts of interest by assigning a telco already involved in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to develop a competitive 5G network.

Fahmi rubbished his claim, adding that MCMC is actively working to prevent any monopolistic practices in this project.

“I’ve been following this issue from time to time. The role of MCMC here is to regulate and prevent any single party from dominating.

“The real issue is that the person who provided Wan Fayhsal with false information is misleading him,” he told reporters today.

He also said that MCMC has met with all mobile network operators participating in the tender process for the second 5G network project on July 1, denying Wan Fayhsal’s allegations. 

Earlier, Wan Fayhsal had claimed that the eligible applicant would inevitably steer its customers towards the second 5G network, citing the dominant control of 90% of all mobile telco subscriptions by CelcomDigi, Maxis, and U Mobile, potentially impacting DNB. – July 4, 2024
