MetMalaysia confirms no tsunami threat, will monitor situations

KOTA KINABALU – The people in Sabah felt mild tremors earlier following an earthquake that occurred in Mindanao, Philippines, at 10.13am today.

They were ordered to evacuate from tall buildings in several districts.

The earthquake, measuring 6.6 magnitude, occurred with its epicentre located 154km southeast of Isabela City at coordinates 6.1° north and 123.3° east, at a depth of 632km.

According to social media posts, the buildings evacuated include those in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Sandakan, Ranau, Tawau, and Kota Belud.

However, the Malaysian Meteorological Department has assured the public that there is no tsunami threat in Malaysia and will continue to monitor the situation.

It also confirmed that people in Sabah and Labuan have felt the shake.

The Fire and Rescue Department had dispatched teams to evacuate buildings in several districts and conduct safety checks.

Among the buildings evacuated were Tun Mustapha Tower, the Kota Kinabalu City Hall building, and Menara Tawau.

No casualties were reported so far. – July 11, 2024
