KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition MPs are allowed to sport white armbands as a sign of protest as it is not against House rules, said Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor (Cameron Highlands-BN).

“In my personal opinion, as long as the outfit worn by the MPs is not against the rules, they are free to wear or put on whatever they want,” he said after Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (Kinabatangan-BN) pointed out that many Perikatan Nasional lawmakers are wearing white armbands.

“I see the MPs over that side, many are using white armbands. There are small ones, big ones, long ones. Has there been a disaster I don’t know?

“So, it is not against (the rule)? Okay. So, this can be an example then.”

Since yesterday, opposition MPs have donned white armbands in the Dewan Rakyat as a sign of protest against speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul’s decision not to vacate the seats of six lawmakers who were sacked from Bersatu.

Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah-PN) had said the white armbands were a sign of protest against “reformati”, a word used to refer that reforms are dead.

The six MPs were kicked out of their party after declaring support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The said MPs are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) dan Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang). – July 16, 2024
