KUALA LUMPUR – Are the national men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, quitting the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) at the end of this month?

According to sources in the badminton fraternity, the pair that showed solid performance in this year’s Thomas Cup could be on their way out of the national body to become independent players.

When asked about this matter, Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky declined to comment and provide further details, adding that BAM will make an official announcement if there are any movements.

However, Rexy said that Sze Fei and Izzuddin’s status will be discussed in a meeting tomorrow with ABM’s top management, where the futures of several other players and coaches within the organisation will also be reviewed.

“I can’t comment on this matter yet, as I need to discuss it with the management first. For now, I have to keep quiet.

“So, for now, I’m not thinking about these issues. My priority now is to prepare the players for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics,” said Rexy.

Meanwhile, Sze Fei and Izzuddin, who were first paired together in 2016, briefly parted ways in January 2023 before being reunited five months later.

According to internal sources, both players have already submitted their resignation letters before the national badminton squad departed for the Paris Olympics.

However, the reason behind their decision remains unclear.

At the same time, there are several other players who are also expected to leave the national squad.

Previously, BAM administration director Michelle Chai told Scoop that due to the Olympics this year, the review process for coaches whose contracts are expiring would only begin in August. – August 12, 2024
