Chow unsure if he’ll be nominated as Penang DAP chief

Party rules stipulate that anyone contesting in its internal elections needs to be nominated by at least two branches

GEORGE TOWN – Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow is uncertain whether he will be able to defend his position in the upcoming state chapter elections on September 22.

According to party rules, candidates must be nominated by at least two branches to contest in the party elections, but Chow said that he is unsure if he has received the necessary nominations.

After attending an event in Bayan Lepas, Chow told reporters that he would wait until the nomination process closes on Saturday.

When asked if he would be defending his position, Chow replied: “That is a question that requires more time to answer.”

Chow, who is also Penang chief minister, explained that once the nomination process ends on Saturday, the DAP headquarters will notify candidates who are eligible to contest.

The DAP headquarters, responsible for organising the elections, will give candidates up to 14 days to decide whether to accept or decline their nominations.

It has traditionally been the case that the Penang DAP chief also serves as the state chief minister.

Chow’s position as Penang DAP chief has recently been a subject of speculation, following reports that he might not be nominated to defend the position. 

However, Chow dismissed the reports, stating that he had not been quoted in them and would not comment prematurely while the nomination process was still underway. – August 19, 2024
