SPAN allocates RM5 mil to improve water access for rural communities

Commission chairman Charles Santiago says residents’ groups, NGOs, welfare and educational institutions can apply for funds

8:01 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – In light of National Day, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is introducing the Water Transformation Fund (DTAS) of RM5 million to improve water access for rural communities.

Speaking to Scoop, SPAN chairman Charles Santiago explained that certain rural areas do not have access to water as it may be far from a water source or possibly have supply issues due to unstable water pressure.

He said the small projects covered include connecting service pipes to residential areas, providing pumps to supply water to tanks, and systems to source water underground.

“Residential associations, NGOs, welfare associations and educational institutions can apply for these funds,” Santiago said when contacted.

In a statement earlier today, SPAN said that the commission is allocating RM5 million for the fund, which will be used to implement approximately 100 related projects from 2024 to 2026.

SPAN also mentioned that the funds would be channelled to small-scale water supply projects that cost less than RM50,000 to build new infrastructure or improve existing ones.

Individuals would not be allowed to apply for the fund, and applicants must attach their respective organisation’s registration information and three quotations from registered contractors with valid permits from SPAN when applying. – August 28, 2024
