[UPDATED] Tang Jie-Ee Wei clinch first Super 500 title at Korea Open

Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair defeated China’s Guo Xin Wa and Li Qian 17-21, 21-13, 21-13

12:05 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei clinched their first-ever Super 500 title at the Korea Open today.

The world number nine Malaysians did it in style, clawing back from a game down to defeat China’s Guo Xin Wa and Li Qian 17-21, 21-13, 21-13.

This victory also marks Tang Jie and Ee Wei’s first World Tour title since the 2023 Taipei Open.

After the prize-giving ceremony, Tang Jie and Ee Wei spoke to SpoTV about the resilience that was crucial to their comeback victory.

“We did a good job because we managed to come back from a game down. It was because of our never-say-die attitude.

“I also want to thank our coach and Tang Jie for their support,” Ee Wei said.

Despite their breakthrough, Tang Jie acknowledged that they still have a long journey ahead.

One thing for certain is Tang Jie and Ee Wei are a transformed pair, having recently reached the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics.

“I made a lot of unnecessary mistakes in the first game, which is something I need to improve on,” Tang Jie admitted.

“Moving forward, we still have a long way to go. I think we can continue to improve our attitudes.”

For their victory, the Malaysians pocketed US$33,180 (RM143,000), while their opponents settled for US$15,960 (RM69,000). – September 1, 2024
