Toe injury recovery at 70%: Aaron-Wooi Yik sit out China open

Despite returning to train on court, Soh Wooi Yik says there was not enough time to prepare for Changzhou tournament

1:42 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Paris Olympics bronze medalists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are skipping the China Open, scheduled to take place next week in Changzhou.

The pair were forced to withdraw because of Wooi Yik’s injury, which he sustained at the Olympics last month.

“So far, the recovery is at 70%. I’ve started light training on the court and will begin full training next week.

“However, there wasn’t enough time to prepare for the China Open, so we withdrew last Tuesday,” he told reporters during a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today.

Hoping to recover fully soon, the 26-year-old shuttler does not rule out the possibility of competing in two upcoming European tournaments – the 2024 Arctic Open and Denmark Open next month.

The Arctic Open will be held in Vantaa, Finland, from October 8 to 13, while the Denmark Open 2024 will take place in Odense from October 15 to 20.

Wooi Yik said this is the first time he has experienced a toe fracture and acknowledged that he needs some time to fully recover.

If the pair takes part in the Denmark Open, then they will be defending their title which they won last year after beating Indonesia’s Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana in the final.

It was a historic win for Aaron and Wooi Yik, as the tournament was the first World Tour title of their careers.

“I need to be patient and rest, which is why I stopped training for over a month,” he said. – September 13, 2024
