Halal now not only about ‘no pork’ and ‘no alcohol’: Anwar

Prime Minister says the label is also about health, hygiene, effectiveness and modern technology

KUALA LUMPUR — The halal industry is no longer just about the traditional understanding of “no pork, no alcohol,” but encompasses a wider scope of what is generally acceptable, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The halal industry now includes aspects of health, hygiene, effectiveness, and modern technology, he added.

“The traditional understanding of halal, which many people hold, is simply ‘no pork, no alcohol.’

“Today, the halal industry excels with certifications that go beyond what is generally accepted,” he said when officiating the Malaysia International Halal Expo (Mihas) 2024 earlier today.

Anwar added that a comprehensive halal industry can complement the Islamic economy, particularly in trade.

Furthermore, he said the halal industry will encompass all segments of society, including farmers, fishermen, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and even grocery stores, ensuring wider participation.

“In achieving the meaning of the Madani Economy and the spirit of Maqasid Syariah, it must encompass almost all of the people,” he said.

Anwar also expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is currently leading a high-level team to coordinate activities and identify new aspects of the halal industry that have yet to be explored.

“Thanks to him and MITI (Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry), MATRADE (Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation), and the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) for putting Malaysia in a convincing position,” he said. – 17 September 2024
