Sole mpox patient stable and healthy, ministry may end quarantine: Dzulkefly

Health minister confirms individual recovering, no new cases detected and situation is ‘under control’

PUTRAJAYA – The health of the mpox-positive patient who was confirmed to be infected with the clade II variant is improving and the individual is in stable condition, said Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad. 

The health minister said the patient, whose positive status was confirmed on September 16, is showing positive progress in recovering.

“The patient, who is currently in isolation, is stable and healthy. The ministry will end the isolation period. We will let you know when it ends,” he told reporters after a clean-up programme in conjunction with Malaysia Clean Up Day today, Bernama reported.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, on September 17, was reported as saying that the Health Ministry detected one positive case of mpox variant clade II the day before. The case was identified from 58 suspected cases this year.

Dzulkefly also added that the ministry has not recorded any new cases and urged the people to continue practicing preventive public health measures. 

He also said the mpox case in Malaysia is under control.

Regarding the mpox vaccine, the health minister said they are awaiting to receive the MVA-BN vaccine supply, emphasising on transparency.

This follows reports of him saying on September 2 that Malaysia would receive the Tecovirimat (Tpoxx) antiviral drug and the MVA-BN vaccine for the mpox virus through the Covid-19 Asean Response Fund soon. 

The MVA-BN vaccine is only for high-risk groups including health workers and close contacts of confirmed cases and is only given based on medical assessments. – September 28, 2024
