KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today unveiled the National Cloud Policy, aimed at, among others, boosting public service innovation and efficiency.

The policy’s other areas of emphasis are economic competitiveness and growth; fuelling economic expansion by enabling businesses, strengthening user trust and data security, and empower citizens through digital inclusivity.

By leveraging cloud technology, the government aims to modernise operations, foster citizen engagement, and streamline public service delivery, Anwar said today.

“Secondly, we seek to promote economic competitiveness and growth and fuel economic expansion by enabling businesses  – especially small and medium enterprises and startups – to harness cloud technology for innovation, operational efficiency, and access to global markets,” he said in his official remarks at Google’s groundbreaking ceremony for its US$2 billion (approximately RM8.24 billion) data centre and cloud region in Malaysia.

On strengthening user trust and data security, Anwar said the policy will establish robust security frameworks and protocols to protect sensitive data and critical infrastructure in both public and private cloud environments.

The National Cloud Policy will also empower citizens through digital inclusivity. Our approach will be citizen-centric and inclusive, utilising cloud technology to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of digital-first public services,” he added.

Besides Anwar, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz also attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s data and regional cloud centre.

The groundbreaking follows Google Cloud’s 2022 announcement to establish a local cloud region, aimed at providing public sector organisations, small to medium-sized businesses, startups and large enterprises with faster, more accessible on-demand computing, AI and machine learning services. – October 1, 2024
