X back in Brazil as top court notes platform’s compliance with orders

The social media channel owned by Elon Musk has been adhering to orders to blocking certain accounts are requested by judge

KUALA LUMPUR — X is online again in Brazil after a month-long ban by its supreme court following owner Elon Musk’s compliance to remove “extremist content” from the social media platform.

X had earlier paid millions in fines imposed by the court, but remained ban for failing to comply with other requirements.

However, Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday gave X the green light to immediately resume operations in its sixth biggest market, Reuters reports.

Moraes in his judgement said X had met all the necessary requirements to resume operations, instructing Brazil’s telecommunications regulator to allow the platform to return online within 24 hours.

Reuters reported that Musk had begun complying with the court’s orders in recent weeks by blocking certain accounts named by the court for misinformation and extreme content.

X also paid requisite fines and engaged a local legal representative, as ordered by the court.

Brazil’s suspension of X was marked by a war of words between de Moraes and Musk, who called the judge a “dictator’ and cried censorship of freedom of speech.

X’s Global Government Affairs Account posted that it was “proud to return to Brazil”, and that it would “continue to defend freedom of speech, within the boundaries of the law, everywhere we operate”. – October 9, 2024
