Malaysia’s men’s doubles duo claim Arctic Open title, completing their BWF World Tour trophy collection across all levels

9:30 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzudin, proudly hold their heads high after their victory in the Arctic Open today, joining the ranks of badminton’s elite.

In a hard-fought 72-minute final, they staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Denmark’s world number two pair, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, 15-21, 21-15, 21-19.

The Arctic Open, held in Vantaa, Finland, is a Super 500 event on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar. This win marks Sze Fei and Izzuddin’s completion of their BWF World Tour title collection, a feat few players achieve.

Their journey began in 2022 when they won their first BWF World Tour title at the German Open, a Super 300 event.

In 2023, they added another Super 300 title at the US Open, following a two-month separation.

They also claimed two more titles at the Super 100 level, winning the Kaohsiung Masters and the Abu Dhabi Masters.

This year, their success continued with a win at the Japan Open in August, a Super 750 event, followed by history-making success at the China Open, a prestigious Super 1000 event—the first time a Malaysian men’s doubles pair has claimed that title.

With today’s Arctic Open victory, Sze Fei and Izzuddin have now won titles at every level: Super 100, 300, 500, 750, and 1000, placing them in a rare class of badminton achievers.

Among Malaysia’s top performers is national legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who earned the title “King of Super Series.”

Next, the duo will travel to Odense, Denmark, to compete at the Denmark Open, which kicks off on Tuesday. – October 13, 2024
