Cops probing Teluk Intan ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang’ counter-rally

The gathering was meant to be an objection towards the waving of Chinese flags during the International Guan Gong Culture Festival

1:19 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The police are expected to haul up organisers of the ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang’ rally which was held at Dataran Menara Condong in Teluk Intan last night, after they failed to notify authorities about their gathering.

According to Perak Police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris in a statement today, Perak Pas state commissioner Razman Zakaria also attended the rally.

The authorities are expected to summon organisers and participants for statements and the matter will be investigated under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

The police would also be applying for an order to investigate to carry out further probes on the issue.

It is understood that the rally was meant to be an objection towards the waving of Chinese flags during the International Guan Gong Culture Festival, which took place at the same location on Thursday.

Photos and videos of the International Guan Gong Cultural Festival went viral on social media last week, with netizens asking if the scene was in China or Malaysia, and other social uploads expressing concerns about communist elements and urging police to investigate.

The event organiser, Guan Gong Cultural Association of Malaysia, on October 25, apologised on Facebook to all Malaysians.

Its chairman Soon Boon Hua said the waving of China’s flag was never part of the planned programme, and that those who waved the flag were not Malaysians but visitors from China.

Perak police are also investigating Thursday’s event as that rally too was held without a permit. – October 27, 2024
