Can Asean Super League revive sepak takraw’s popularity?

Astaf aims to unite top clubs from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines in a bid for sustainability, growth

10:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — Astaf is planning to establish the Asean Super League (ASL), which will feature premier sepak takraw clubs from the region.

Yet, the critical issue is how the federation will ensure the league’s sustainability and avoid potential setbacks.

Previously, sepak takraw had a league called the Istaf Super Series, launched in 2011 with participation from various countries. Unfortunately, it was discontinued in 2015 due to challenges in securing sponsorship.

While many Asean countries excel in sepak takraw, the sport does not have a large following everywhere. Only Thailand and Malaysia boast significant viewership.

Astaf president Datuk Halim Kader said that the organisation spent SGD 15 million (RM 49.5 million) to host the league for five years, a challenging endeavour he takes pride in.

Halim expressed hope that the launch of the Asean Super League would mark a new chapter for sepak takraw, as it features the top teams and players from the region.

“To maintain interest in sepak takraw, we need to update its branding. When the Istaf Super Series was held, it elevated the sport to a higher level.

“Now, with the establishment of the STL, which has been around for 10 years, and the upcoming ASL, plans for the organisation are being detailed. I propose that this inaugural edition be hosted in Malaysia.

“It will involve club teams from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, and I believe we can sustain it for a period of five to ten years,” said Halim.

He aims to replicate the success of the AFF Cup in football, a phenomenon in the region.

However, he did not specify when the tournament would take place or how many events would be contested, aside from his desire for Malaysia to host the first edition.

Currently, the only tournament uniting the best sepak takraw clubs is the Sepak Takraw League Champions Cup.

This year, four international teams have been invited: the Royal Thai Air Force (Thailand), Garuda Sepak Takraw (Indonesia), STFI India Fighters (India), and MGPC Singapore (Singapore), who will compete alongside the top four teams from the STL. — October 29, 2024
