KUALA LUMPUR – Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has become the first government-linked company (GLC) to commit to a minimum wage of RM1,700, alongside increasing salaries across its workforce, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

According to the Prime Minister, this commitment reflects TNB’s success not only in achieving profitability and efficient management but also in prioritising employee welfare.

“The TNB Board of Directors and Management have agreed to raise wages and overall earnings for all TNB staff,” he said.

“I extend my gratitude to the chairman, board members, and senior management of TNB for agreeing to be the first GLC to heed the government’s call to raise the minimum wage for TNB employees.”

Anwar shared these remarks at the 75th-anniversary celebration of TNB at the Leo Moggie Convention Centre here today.

Also present were Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and TNB Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.

In the 2025 Budget presentation, Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, announced the government’s decision to increase the minimum wage from RM1,500 to RM1,700, effective from February 1, 2025.

Anwar emphasised that an organisation’s success hinges on the dedication and commitment of its employees at all levels. He praised TNB for its efforts, noting the utility’s achievements in both profit generation and employee welfare.

“Over 75 years, TNB has built a legacy of excellence in Malaysia, especially within the national electricity sector. Remarkably, TNB’s leadership is ready to adapt to the changing times,” he said.

“However, I stress that the primary duty is not just to be proud of profits, but to care for employees.”

Anwar also touched on Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN next year, where he affirmed the country’s commitment to two major goals: establishing Malaysia as the region’s largest energy hub and ensuring the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative proceeds to strengthen energy supply and investment opportunities.

“The government recognises the significant investment this entails and is exploring ways for TNB to partner with other corporations in realising the ASEAN grid project,” he said.

Additionally, Anwar urged TNB to accelerate its transition from coal dependence to alternative energy sources to address climate change impacts.

“This has become a critical challenge for the national utility as it plans and prepares for this shift,” he added. – October 29, 2024
