KUALA LUMPUR —  Maxis Bhd will engage with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over the latter’s decision to select U Mobile Sdn Bhd as implementor of the second 5G network.

In a statement today, Maxis said it “will consider its options” after discussions with stakeholders, and after engaging with MCMC “to understand the rationale for their decision”.

Maxis said it had submitted a comprehensive technical and commercial proposal in response to MCMC’s invitation to tender for the second 5G network.

“With Maxis’ robust network infrastructure and know-how, our 5G network would have taken far less time and resources to cover the same percentage of populated areas that the first 5G network covered. We would also have provided in-building 5G coverage in those areas,” it said.

“Our proposal encapsulated our 30 years of experience in financing, building, and operating first-rate networks and in providing top-notch service to our customers in Malaysia,” it added.

It also stressed that it was a “homegrown company led by Malaysians” with  77% of its shares owned by citizens.

“We are deeply committed to the long-term development of Malaysia, and to ensuring that our nation shares in the benefits of 5G and the digital economy,” it said.

On November 1, MCMC announced that U Mobile had been selected to implement the country’s second 5G network after a detailed technical and commercial evaluation.

The following day, U Mobile announced it was reducing its foreign majority shareholding to 20% to ensure greater Malaysian control and invite participation from local investors.

Maxis in its statement today assured customers of continued 5G services through its existing access agreement with Digital Nasional Bhd even as it continues to explore its 5G options and engage with the stakeholders. – November 3, 2024
