SEBERANG JAYA — The surprising loss of Gobind Singh Deo in yesterday’s Selangor DAP elections is part of the democratic process, says DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Gobind, who finished 16th with 675 votes, missed the top-15 cut for the 2024-2027 term. 

Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin led the polls with 1,180 votes, followed closely by Tiew Way Keng (1,155) and Kinrara assemblyman and Selangor state executive councillor Ng Sze Han (1,086). Ean Yong Hian Wah clinched the final spot with 753 votes.

The Damansara MP and Digital Minister accepted the grassroots decision gracefully, expressing confidence in the new state leadership lineup’s ability to strengthen the party.

Loke commended Gobind for his open-hearted acceptance of the delegates’ decision, which he said reflects the spirit of party leadership. 

He also thanked Gobind for his contributions to Selangor DAP as chairman over the last two terms.

“He continues to play an important role in the (party’s) national leadership as our deputy chairman. 

“It does not mean that because of his defeat, he has to step aside (as minister). Definitely no.

“I want to stress that he would continue to represent the party in the Cabinet,” he told the reporters at an agreement signing ceremony for the construction of an apartment project for the squatters of Kg Manis in Perai.

Gobind, who led Selangor DAP for two terms, hands over the leadership to Ng. 

Ng expressed his gratitude for Gobind’s service, crediting his leadership for the party’s strong performance in the last general election, the state assembly elections, and the Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election in May. — November 11, 2024
