KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 124 communication towers are reported to still be affected by the floods, with 47 National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) unable to operate due to facility damage.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken proactive steps to address telecommunications coverage issues in flood-affected areas.

“This includes coordinating the repair of communication infrastructure to ensure residents can stay connected during the disaster.

“Insha’Allah, I will discuss with MCMC and the Information Department to deploy Madani community teams from unaffected states or neighbouring states to assist in the clean-up efforts after the floodwaters recede.

“MCMC will also update with aid packages which they will announce later,” he said when met at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Communications Carnival held at IWK Eco Park, Pantai Dalam here today.

Meanwhile, Fahmi informed that his ministry has also activated the Flood Disaster Relief Fund established in 2022 to ease the burden of 54 media practitioners affected by the floods.

Fahmi said he will visit the disaster areas as instructed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who told all ministers to go on the ground to help flood victims.

“God willing, in the near future, either during the clean-up process or earlier, I will go down as instructed by the prime minister.

“I have also asked MCMC to immediately verify the internet status at all 679 temporary evacuation centres to ensure smooth internet connectivity in the affected areas.

Currently, the flood situation in seven states this morning has worsened with the number of flood victims housed in temporary evacuation centres exceeding 120,000 as of this morning, compared to 106,505 reported last night. – November 30, 2024
