PM pledges RM50 mil in additional flood relief for Kelantan, Terengganu

Over 43,000 victims displaced in Terengganu and 96,000 in Kelantan, federal aid targets infrastructure repairs and civil servant assistance

1:12 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an immediate allocation of RM25 million each for Kelantan and Terengganu to address the devastating floods that have struck the states.

The funds, channelled through the Prime Minister’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), will be used to repair critical infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems, including raising road levels in Hulu Besut, Bernama reported.

Additionally, Putrajaya will provide RM500 in special financial aid to over 14,000 civil servants in Terengganu, involving a total allocation of RM7.4 million.

He made the announcements after visiting flood victims at the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SK Kg Telaga Papan, Setiu in Terengganu, which currently houses 269 evacuees.

The prime minister had earlier arrived at Sultan Mahmud International Airport, Kuala Terengganu at 10.25am today to personally assess the current flood situation in the state.

He was welcomed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

The number of flood victims in Terengganu has continued to rise, reaching 43,281 this morning compared to 41,409 last night. This involves 11,679 families sheltering at 305 PPS across all eight affected districts in the state.

According to the latest data from the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, Besut recorded the highest number of victims with 16,084, followed by Hulu Terengganu (7,080), Dungun (6,470), Setiu (6,332), Kuala Terengganu (2,940), Kuala Nerus (2,307), Kemaman (1,230) and Marang (775).

A check on the InfoBanjir portal as of 8.15 am revealed that 12 river water level monitoring stations – four in Hulu Terengganu, three in Dungun, two in Kuala Nerus, and one each in Kemaman, Marang, and Setiu – have recorded dangerous water levels.

Meanwhile, Kelantan still remains the worst-hit state as the number of flood victims in 284 PPS has reached 96,743 people from 29,928 families, compared to 93,158 last night.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Disaster Info Portal, Pasir Mas continues to record the highest number of victims at 29,370, followed by Tumpat (17,680), Kota Bharu (14,154), Pasir Puteh (9,870), and Kuala Krai (6,614).

Other affected areas include Bachok with 6,952 victims, Machang (6,098), Tanah Merah (5,318), Jeli (660), and Gua Musang (36). – December 1, 2024

Why is there a monopoly of rice in Malaysia ? — Remy Majangkim

Before the formation of Malaysia, rice was basically state affairs, but as times went on, the rice industry in Malaysia was hijacked by the federal government as it saw fit and included in a federal act that ultimately disbanded the Sabah Padi Board, paving the way for a capitalist corporation to have a complete monopoly.
