50% of new govt vehicles to be EV or hybrid in 2025

Finance Ministry states this objective that will involve eight ministries

KUALA LUMPUR — 50% of new government vehicles will be electric or hybrid next year under Putrajaya’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, the Finance Ministry said.

This commitment for 2025 is a minimum for all new vehicle procurements, starting with a pilot programme to assess the feasibility of electric vehicle (EV) use by the government.

“The pilot will obtain a true picture of the level of effectiveness and viability of using TVs as department vehicles and official vehicles.

“It will also identify issues and aspects related to implementation, for the purpose of comprehensively implementing the programme,” the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply.

Implementation will run for six to eight months, and will involve eight ministries that are members of the National EV Steering Committee.

The finance ministry said it is still reviewing the cost of the pilot programme but assured it will be covered under existing allocations without involving new funding.

The ministry’s reply was to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (Jerantut-PN) who asked about EV adoption by the government for its official vehicles.
