KUALA LUMPUR — The uncertainty surrounding the next move of Malaysia’s men’s singles coach Hendrawan has been resolved, as he confirmed his decision to return to Indonesia and join the Djarum Badminton Club (PB Djarum).

Speculation had swirled around the 52-year-old coach after his contract with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) was not renewed at the end of this year.

Rumours included a potential move to Singapore and the possibility of coaching independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia, following Wong Tat Meng’s decision not to extend his contract.

However, Hendrawan has now chosen to rejoin PB Djarum, the club where he began his career in 1984.

“I have made my decision… to join PB Djarum to help develop badminton in Indonesia,” Hendrawan briefly announced in an Instagram post today.

Having spent 15 years with BAM as the men’s singles coach, Hendrawan has mentored several of Malaysia’s top players, including Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Lee Zii Jia, and Ng Tze Yong.

He also played a key role in assisting Chong Wei during two Olympic campaigns in London 2012 and Rio 2016, where they secured silver medals, and coached Zii Jia to victory at the All England in 2020.

PB Djarum is one of Indonesia’s largest badminton clubs and has produced many of the country’s renowned players, including Alan Budi Kusuma, Lim Swie King, Tontowi Ahmad, and Liliyana Natsir. — December 9, 2024
