PUTRAJAYA – Sg Buloh MP Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has reaffirmed his commitment to forgo his salary and allowances as an elected representative, staying true to the promise he made during the 15th general election (GE15).
Ramanan, who rose to prominence after defeating heavyweight candidate and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin in the Sg Buloh parliamentary contest, has maintained that this pledge is not a publicity stunt but a testament to his dedication to serving the people.
He said that since taking office as deputy entrepreneur and cooperatives development minister, he has redirected over RM550,000 of his salary and allowances to benefit the community.
This includes donations to more than 100 houses of worship such as mosques, surau, temples, and churches, as well as direct aid to the B40 group in the parliamentary area.
“I firmly believe that a promise made is a promise kept. Throughout my term, I will continue this practice, and if re-elected in the next GE, I intend to uphold this commitment, even though I’ve been criticised by some MPs for doing so,” he said during a recent interview.
He reiterated that this initiative is not a gimmick but a pledge he holds dear, adding that not everyone can keep the promises they make.
Ramanan’s dedication extends beyond financial contributions. He is also focused on improving the lives of constituents through initiatives such as the Madani Sales programme, which offers basic necessities at a 50% discount, and the Back-to-School programme, providing essential school supplies to underprivileged students.
“The Madani Sale in Sg Buloh is the most affordable in the country. The Malaysian Cooperative Commission provides a 30% discount, and I personally add another 20% to make it a 50% reduction.
“The response has been overwhelming, with items selling out at every event. This motivates me to continue these efforts to benefit more people,” he said.
Ramanan also shared that he draws inspiration from the late Tun S. Samy Vellu, the former MIC president and a revered figure in the Indian community.
“Samy Vellu was a legend, and I have learned a great deal from him. His courage is unparalleled, but I strive to follow his bold and outspoken leadership style because the Indian community deeply values leaders who are vocal and action-driven,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that each leader has their own approach to voicing opinions, which must evolve with the times, adding that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim exemplifies a leadership style that emphasises quiet yet effective action.
“Anwar is a results-oriented leader who values actions over words. He dislikes leaders who are self-absorbed and overly focused on politicking. He is more concerned with the people’s future,” he added.
On another note, Ramanan, who is also PKR deputy information chief, hinted at contesting a top position in the party during the upcoming elections.
However, he remained coy about the specific role, saying that he must first seek the blessing of Anwar, who is also the party president.
Ramanan affirmed his commitment to following the president’s directives to strengthen the party and amplify the voices of marginalised groups, especially the Indian community, at the highest levels.
He added that PKR is the ideal platform for championing the Indian community’s concerns, as the party currently boasts 31 division chiefs from the community. – December 12, 2024
