Nearly 500 enforcement officers charged with graft since 2020: Azalina

54 officers were prosecuted for corruption involving smuggling

KUALA LUMPUR — 485 enforcement officers were charged with various corruption offences in the last five years, with 238 of them convicted, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

These figures were out of a total of 1,192 investigations opened from 2020 until September this year, based on 8,067 tip-offs or information given to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Azalina did not provide a breakdown of the offences, except to say that of the number of investigation papers opened, 104 were related to smuggling and investigations resulted in 154 arrests, and 54 officers charged.

She stated the figures in a written parliamentary reply to Nurul Amin Hamid (Padang Terap-PN) who asked for the number of investigations and prosecutions against corrupt enforcement officials involved in smuggling since 2018.

The most investigations into smuggling were conducted this year, with MACC opening 64 files, arresting 83 officers and charging 24.

The second “busiest” year was 2023, with 13 investigation papers into smuggling offences opened, 23 arrests made, and two prosecutions.

There were zero prosecutions in 2022, when only two investigations were conducted and six enforcement officers were arrested. – December 13, 2024
