Defamation storm: MCMC probes viral claims about Agong, PM

Comms minister warns social media users after baseless allegations spark controversy

6:55 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a viral incident involving a social media user who allegedly defamed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the authorities were aware of the matter and had referred it to the relevant agencies for further action, Bulletin TV3 reported.

“I am aware that the individual involved has specifically apologised. I hope this serves as a lesson for them not to slander or make baseless accusations,” he said.

“These are two important individuals and institutions, namely the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Prime Minister.

“So, if the authorities wish to take any action, I leave it to them. But we will monitor the situation.”

“If there are any complaints from the public, MCMC will act accordingly,” he said during the Bulletin TV3 Podcast recently.

Fahmi also urged social media users to exercise caution in their comments, as they could lead to defamation.

“I once again remind everyone to be moderate and cautious when posting comments, as what is concerning is if these comments violate the law,” he said.

“We do not want a situation where the information shared is not based on facts, as that can lead to harm,” he added.

Recently, a TikTok user went viral after claiming that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Prime Minister had lunch at a non-halal restaurant.

However, the video has since been removed, and the user has issued an apology for the mistake. – December 16, 2024
