‘Disfigured’ dead cats found on UM campus, student union appeals for information

Police report lodged while students relocate other cats for their safety

1:23 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Two cases of cat killings have been found on the University Malaya campus, with the animals’ limbs “intentionally disfigured”.

The UM Student Union 2024/2025 from the Business and Economics Faculty in a statement circulated  via the Cat Lovers Group Malaysia on Facebook, said the cat abuse occurred on December 12 and 16 at different locations on campus.

Stressing that it does not tolerate any form of violence and abuse against any living being, the group said that it is working closely with the university’s management to investigate the issue and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

It also urged those with information on the incidents to immediately reach out to student representatives, adding: “Your cooperation could make a real difference in ensuring justice is served and our campus remains a place of safety and compassion.”

Meanwhile, in an update posted by Facebook user Carline Lim at around 10pm last night, the user said that the student union had filed a police report

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s veterinary team had also visited the faculty at around 4pm yesterday, she added.

She said some students had opted to take home three other cats on the campus for their safety.

Meanwhile, Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood was reported on Buletin TV3 saying that the cat slayings were by stray dogs .

He confirmed that police received a report at the Pantai police station at 6.20pm yesterday, and the report has been referred to the Veterinary Services Department and the UM authorities for further action.

This is not the first case of animal abuse linked to a local university. In November, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) condemned the killing of three cats whose bodies were found on its Setapak campus.

The case was classified under Section 428 of the Penal Code on mischief by killing an animal. – December 18, 2024
