University management says none of its faculties or departments had asked the professor to return

KUALA LUMPUR — Universiti Malaya (UM) has denied reports that a professor, who was suspended last month for allegedly sharing nude pictures of himself with students, is still visiting the campus.

In a statement, the university confirmed that none of its faculties or departments had asked the professor to return to campus.

“(Our) internal checks have also found no evidence or witness to back the allegations.

“The professor was also contacted and (was) reminded not to be present at the campus throughout the duration of the suspension enforced,” said UM in a statement. 

The university also reassured the public that it would always ensure the safety of everyone on the campus, especially the students.

The university’s statement follows a news report in MalaysiaKini yesterday on one of the alleged victims who said the professor continued to visit the campus despite his suspension. 

On December 20, the UM Feminist Club submitted a memorandum to the university’s management, alleging sexual harassment involving the professor from its Mathematical Sciences Institute.

The memorandum highlighted multiple allegations of harassment against the professor and criticised UM’s apparent delay in addressing the complaints, calling it a “disregard for students’ rights.”

The professor was suspended three days later, with the university saying that the procedure was carried out under the Statutory Bodies (Discipline and Surcharge) Act 2000 (Act 605). – January 1, 2025
