MCA skips pro-Najib rally but won’t stop anyone from personally going

Party says it takes note of Istana Negara’s official statement, reiterates its stance of respecting the constitution and YDPA’s prerogative powers

8:03 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – MCA has confirmed that it will not deploy its members for the upcoming solidarity gathering for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, initially planned to take place at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on 6 January.

However, the party said it would not prevent individuals from attending.

“In light of these latest developments, MCA has decided not to mobilise party members to attend the gathering. However, MCA will not prevent individuals from attending in their personal capacity,” it said in a press statement today.

The party’s announcement follows Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s media statement on January 3, which confirmed the rally’s cancellation. The decision came after police advised against the event in a directive issued at 7.30pm on the same day.

MCA reiterated its respect for constitutional processes and the authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“MCA takes note of the official statement issued by Istana Negara yesterday and reiterates its stance of respecting the Federal Constitution, including the prerogative powers of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Article 42(1) and (2) to grant pardons, reprieves, and commutations of sentences for any offenses committed within the Federal Territories.”

Addressing public concerns over transparency, MCA called on the government to clarify the issue of a royal addendum allegedly linked to Najib’s house detention.

“The government must be transparent about whether such an addendum existed during the tenure of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The government must uphold and honour all directives from His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at all times in accordance with the Federal Constitution.”

The party’s response followed MIC’s decision to move the gathering to Batu Caves for a special prayer session, and PAS confirming that it will proceed with the rally. – January 4, 2025
