MCMC questions PAS assemblyman over Facebook fake news on PM

Most accounts sharing the disinformation were detected to be fake, commission adds

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has questioned a Selangor PAS state assemblyman over a social media posting spreading disinformation relating to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.   

The commission said that a statement from Sg Burong assemblyman Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin, was recorded on January 7 after it was determined that he was the account holder of a Facebook profile spreading the false information.   

“In the joint inspection with the police, (Zamri) was requested to hand over a smartphone and a SIM card as evidence to assist investigations. A forensic analysis will be conducted on the device,” MCMC said in a statement today.   

The commission also noted that a majority of the Facebook accounts detected to have shared the disinformation on the prime minister were fake profiles.  

The case, it added, is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. A person found guilty under the law can be sentenced to a maximum RM50,000 fine, imprisonment for up to one year or both.   

“MCMC asks that the public be careful when uploading anything on social media and ensure that information shared is true and legitimate.   

“This is to ensure a safe online environment with integrity for the wellbeing of the people,” MCMC said. – January 9, 2024
