KUALA LUMPUR — The supplier of a “halal”-stamped “ham sandwich” to KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd said today that chicken slices used in the product are halal certified.

Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd in a press statement said the chicken meat slices have a valid halal certificate issued by the Islamic development Department (Jakim).

It also confirmed an inspection on its factory premises by Jakim and the Domestic Trade and Living Costs Ministry (KPDN) on Jan 10.

“The matter is currently being investigated by Jakim and KPDN.

“We pledge to give our full cooperation to KPDN and Jakim in this investigation,” Shake and Bake Cafe said.

Along with its press statement, the supplier also included a copy of its halal certificate from Jakim for a list of its products, including “Chicken Sandwich”.

However, its brief statement did not address issues surrounding its labelling process, which saw the “ham sandwich” highlighted on social media recently bearing the halal logo on the barcode sticker, and the word “chicken” missing from the sandwich’s description.

Jakim has also said that despite the halal logo, the sandwiches did not possess proper halal certification.

KPDN’s enforcement director-general Datuk Azman Adam later said the sandwich maker is suspected of using halal logos issued by Jakim that expired in October 2023 after it bought over the business from an earlier company that obtained halal certification.

The issue came to light when Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh made a social media video on the sale of “halal” ham and cheese sandwiches after being informed of it by students at Universiti Malaya where the product was sold at a KK Concept Store on campus.

KK Supermart earlier said the purported ham sandwich contained chicken meat and that it had lodged a police report against Shake and Bake Cafe, which had done the labelling.

The convenience chain store has also served the supplier a letter of demand. – January 15, 2025
