Communications minister confirms progress, urges swift action on social media regulations

CYBERJAYA – Meta Platforms Inc (Meta) has submitted documents to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as part of its application to obtain an operating licence in Malaysia.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the development, saying that the process is currently underway.

“We are processing the documents, and we anticipate issuing the licence in the near future.

“Others, such as Google, Microsoft, which manages LinkedIn, and X, are also in the process (of obtaining licences).

“At MCMC’s end, several matters are being followed up, and each platform has its own perspective,” he said at a press conference following the launch of the Sebenarnya.my Chatbot here today.

Also present was MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.

Fahmi emphasised the need to expedite licensing for internet messaging and social media service providers, ensuring the process does not face undue delays.

“I believe we need to take action, and we won’t delay too long before this matter is addressed,” he said.

Previously, Tencent (WeChat) became the first internet messaging and social media service provider to receive the Class Licence for Application Service Provider [ASP (C)] to operate in Malaysia, followed by ByteDance (TikTok) and Telegram. – January 28, 2025
