LRT Titiwangsa tragedy: Loke announces safety upgrades after OKU passenger’s death

Prasarana to install platform screen doors across LRT lines to prevent future incidents

6:08 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced immediate and long-term safety upgrades at train stations following the tragic death of a visually impaired passenger at Titiwangsa LRT station this morning.

Loke said Prasarana would be implementing several immediate safety upgrades, including the installation of smart CCTV systems designed to detect risky behaviour at stations

“The tragedy at Titiwangsa station this morning, which took the life of a passenger, is truly heartbreaking. On behalf of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, I extend my condolences to the victim’s family and those affected by this incident.

“The Ministry of Transport is working closely with all relevant parties, particularly Prasarana, to conduct a thorough investigation.”

“I have instructed a comprehensive review of safety measures at all train stations, with a particular focus on facilities for persons with disabilities (OKU),” he said in a statement.

In the long term, he said Prasarana plans to install platform screen doors (PSD) across all LRT lines as a critical safety measure to prevent passengers from accidentally falling onto the tracks.

“In the meantime, passengers requiring additional assistance, including persons with disabilities, are advised to approach Prasarana staff or auxiliary police at stations to ensure their needs are properly attended to.

“Passenger safety and welfare remain our top priority. The government is committed to ensuring a safer, more inclusive, and user-friendly public transport system for all Malaysians,” he said.

Earlier, a visually impaired man was killed after falling onto the tracks and being struck by a train at the Titiwangsa LRT station in Jalan Tun Razak.

Senior Fire Officer I Fadil Hesam Mohd, who led the emergency response, confirmed that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.

“The Kuala Lumpur Operations Centre received an emergency call at approximately 8.38 am via the MERS-999 system reporting the incident,” he said in a statement.

Fadil said initial investigations suggest the victim lost his balance and fell onto the tracks unnoticed by the train driver.

“The authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident and are reviewing train operation records from the time of the incident,” he added.

Rapid Rail, in a statement, said train services at PWTC, Titiwangsa, Sentul, and Sentul Timur stations were temporarily suspended following the incident. Alternative transport services, including free shuttle buses, were activated to assist affected passengers.

As a safety measure, Rapid Rail said power supply at the affected station was deactivated to allow police, fire and rescue personnel, and paramedics to carry out their work safely.

“Rapid Rail will fully cooperate with the authorities in investigating the incident and will ensure the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line resumes normal operations as soon as possible.

“We apologise to all passengers affected by this incident and the resulting service delays this morning,” the statement said. – February 22, 2025
