Don’t involve Umno in Ismail Sabri’s MACC investigation: Asyraf Wajdi

Umno sec-gen warns against attempts to link party to corruption probe, says legal action will be taken if necessary

KUALA LUMPUR — Umno has denied any involvement in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement today, Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party takes a serious view of any attempt to link Umno to the investigation.

“Umno asserts that the party has no connection to the findings and believes the MACC should be given the space to conduct a transparent, independent, and fair investigation without interference,” he said.

On March 2, the MACC announced that it had seized 16 kilograms of pure gold bars worth RM7 million and RM170 million in cash from premises linked to four of Ismail Sabri’s senior officials.

The MACC said the seizures were made during searches of a residence and three premises believed to be “safehouses.”

“The investigation is being conducted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001,” it said.

Following this, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said Ismail Sabri is expected to appear at the agency’s headquarters this Friday to provide a statement regarding the corruption and money laundering case involving him.

Asyraf said Umno would not hesitate to take legal action against those who deliberately link, accuse, or create the perception that the party is connected to the case under investigation. — March 6, 2025
