KBS partners with police, hospitals, and universities to enhance drug prevention and intervention efforts

9:31 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is ramping up efforts to combat youth social issues, particularly drug abuse, through a coordinated approach and strategic partnerships with various agencies.

Minister Hannah Yeoh said KBS is working closely with Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) to develop holistic initiatives.

“As a first step, KBS has engaged with PDRM to discuss trends and concerns related to this issue,” she said at a press conference after attending a briefing by HKL’s Psychiatry and Mental Health Department today.

The briefing aimed to enhance advocacy efforts by focusing on four key areas: the effects of substance use, drug consumption patterns, available treatment systems, and intervention methods for both outpatient and inpatient services.

The initiative includes interactive programmes to educate youths on the dangers of drug abuse, seeking help, and the importance of psychosocial support through forums, simulations, and digital campaigns.

Citing recent data, Hannah said nearly 50% of drug abuse patients are aged between 15 and 30.

“Through awareness materials, we want young people to recognise this as a dangerous trend while also empowering parents and peers to identify warning signs and seek help,” she said, adding that KBS will also expand collaboration with agencies such as the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) and non-governmental organisations. — March 6, 2025
