MACC questions Ismail Sabri’s doctor as RM170mil probe deepens

Graft buster verifies ex-PM’s health status after repeated absences

8:50 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has questioned the doctor treating former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as part of its ongoing corruption and money laundering investigation.

According to an MACC source, the interview took place at a hospital in Selangor from 4pm to 5pm on Friday, Bernama reported.

The session was conducted to assess the Bera MP’s health status and gather medical information before his scheduled appearance to provide a statement next Thursday.

However, the source emphasised that the doctor is not regarded as a witness in the case.

“So far, 32 witnesses have given statements, including four of Ismail Sabri’s former senior officers who were previously remanded and later released on MACC bail,” the source added.

The former UMNO vice president was initially expected to appear before MACC on Wednesday, but the session was postponed to Friday before being rescheduled once again to March 13 due to his health condition.

He has been receiving treatment at a private medical centre since February 21, when he collapsed at his home.

It is understood that the interview with the doctor was conducted as a follow-up after Ismail Sabri submitted a medical leave certificate, which led to the postponement of his statement recording.

The MACC sought to verify his health status before setting a new date for him to appear before investigators.

On March 3, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in the case. His name emerged in the probe following the discovery of approximately RM170 million in cash at a safe house during an MACC raid.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the anti-graft agency expected to summon additional witnesses as part of efforts to establish the source of the funds and determine whether illicit activities were involved.
