MACC seizes 13 bank accounts with RM9.33 mil linked to Ismail Sabri probe

Sources say account frozen after four individuals linked to former minister were arrested

4:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized 13 bank accounts containing RM9.33 million linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as part of an investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering.

According to sources, the accounts were frozen following the arrest of four individuals connected to the ninth prime minister in February.

The seizures came after Ismail Sabri was questioned for the first time on February 11, according to Berita Harian.

“The accounts are said to belong to individuals, including the four detained by MACC,” the source said.

MACC has not ruled out the possibility of recording a statement from Ismail Sabri, who is also Bera MP, after his medical leave ends tomorrow.

He was previously scheduled to be questioned last Friday but was unable to do so due to health reasons.

Ismail Sabri provided a statement to MACC on February 19 after officially declaring his assets on February 10.

To date, MACC has recorded statements from 36 individuals, including 32 witnesses and four individuals who were previously detained.

“There are 23 new witnesses who have yet to have their statements recorded, while four others are still having their statements recorded.

“As for the bank documents, applications have been made to the agencies and they are still in the process of preparing (the documents) to be submitted to MACC,” the source told the media.

On March 2, MACC confirmed that it had seized 16kg of pure gold bullion worth RM7 million and RM170 million in cash in various currencies from premises linked to four senior officials of the Bera MP.

The investigation into Ismail Sabri is being conducted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. – March 11, 2025
