KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating preacher Zamri Vinoth after he reuploaded controversial remarks insulting religion that had been removed from his Facebook account.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he had instructed the MCMC to examine the matter.

“The individual reuploaded content that had been taken down.

“(Social media) platforms will remove content if they determine that it violates laws or the platform’s community guidelines.

“Therefore, in Facebook Meta’s view, the content violated the law. We will follow up with further action,” he said after attending Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s breaking fast event with the media yesterday evening.

The MCMC is reviewing the reuploaded post by Zamri after it was removed by Facebook on Sunday.

Fahmi said he had directed the national internet regulatory agency to assess the issue and take appropriate action based on their findings.

“The MCMC has yet to inform me of any action taken following the individual’s decision to repost content that had been taken down.

“If Meta deems the content to have violated laws or the platform’s community guidelines, then it will be removed.

“So we (the government) will follow up with action based on the MCMC’s investigation,” he told reporters after the event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Zamri’s Facebook post, which contained remarks deemed insulting to religion, was reportedly removed from the social media platform on Sunday.

However, he allegedly reposted the content shortly after it was taken down, prompting calls for his arrest. – March 12, 2025
