Malaysia’s All England campaign ends as last pairs crash out

Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and Pearly-Thinaah exit in quarter-finals, ending Malaysia’s run in Birmingham

9:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s campaign at the All England Badminton Championships came to an end today after mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah suffered quarter-final defeats in Birmingham.

Top-seeded Soon Huat-Shevon started strongly but could not sustain their momentum, falling 21-18, 8-21, 10-21 to China’s Huang Dongping-Jiang Zhenbang in 45 minutes at the Utilita Arena Birmingham.

Soon Huat admitted that the Chinese pair were more consistent and capitalised on their mistakes.

“We didn’t focus on our endurance, and we weren’t as consistent as them.

“They played more consistently than us, and we (also) made a lot of mistakes,” he said in an audio clip shared by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) today.

It was also the end of the road for top national women’s doubles pair of Pearly-Thinaah, who lost 17-21, 19-21 to Japan’s Chiharu Shida-Nami Matsuyama in the quarter-finals.

With the exit of Soon Huat-Shevon and Pearly-Thinaah, Malaysia’s challenge has come to an end in the Super 1000 tournament. — March 14, 2025
